Snow in the Sahara, the hottest desert in the world, makes for shocking images

Snow in the Sahara desert? It happened.

Images and video captured over the weekend show the hottest desert in the world partially covered in white snow after a rare snowstorm on Jan. 7.

Red dunes in northern Algeria's Ain Sefra, known as The Gateway to the Desert, were swept white after high pressure over Europe sent cold air further south than usual, U.K.'s national weather service told The Sun.

The snow stuck around from morning until 5 p.m., photographer Karim Bouchetata told the newspaper.

That area of the world rarely sees temperatures below 40 degrees in January,  its coldest month, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

This isn't the first time that part of the desert has had snow. Snow was also seen in the area in December 2016. In 1979, it actually snowed in Ain Sefra for 30 minutes, Gizmodo reports.
